Having an efficient, reliable and convenient public transportation system is imperative in a city as busy and congested as Boston for number of reasons. First off, it decreases traffic congestion by removing the number of cars on the streets at any given time. Secondly, effective transportation systems have been shown to have very positive effects on a socioeconomic level. For example, in MedellĂn, Colombia, the then mayor Sergio Fajardo dramatically decreased crime rates and increased incomes and living standards in the impoverished informal city by connecting it to the inner city using cable cars. Finally, public transportation is environmentally beneficial. In the last year, US drivers drove an extra million miles just looking for parking spots. These cars could be taken out of the city by having good transportation systems.
